How Drapeau Media helped All Natural Skin Care branch out from Etsy to start their own branded eCommerce website

What started on Etsy as a side hustle quickly turned into the means for a thriving business. Formally known on Etsy as “Uniquely Made Skin Care” owner and operator Alicia Natal wanted to branch out from the Etsy marketplace and start her own eCommerce website to grow her brand and increase her profit margins per sale. We worked together to create some stunning, scroll-stopping photography for a handful of products. Keep reading to learn more about how we helped Alicia level up her business and drive revenue through product photography.

Why Branch Out From Etsy?

Etsy is a great platform for small businesses that can sell their products online. With hundreds of millions of monthly visitors, The platform is basically an Amazon for small, DIY-styled companies. You can build a storefront with your brand in a few minutes and begin offering your products. This ease of access, though, comes with a price. And that price is transaction fees Etsy places on their vendors.

Sellers through Etsy incur a 6.5% fee per transaction based on the unit sold. For most sellers, prices are already low to be competitive which means the margins for actual profit are even lower. Breaking away from Etsy means opening up your storefront through platforms such as Shopify or Squarespace. While the upfront cost may be higher, the long-term benefits of this usually will outweigh the cons if you have big plans for your business. Jumping from Etsy has several benefits:

  • Lower transaction costs (generally ranges from 2.4%-3%)

  • Distinguish yourself from other brands

  • Gives your company more legitimacy

  • You have more control over branding, pricing, and overall design of your store’s online presence

While Etsy as a whole is a wonderful platform, and you don’t even need to stop using it altogether, for many small business owners starting their own eCommerce store is the long-term goal in creating a more sustainable business.

Why Use a Professional for Website Product Photography?

More than 87% of customers say product photography and its quality is a key part of the online shopping experience. Product photography is often your first impression on brand-new customers and it is important to grab and hold their attention as quickly and effectively as possible!

While it's easy to get away with low-budget product photography when selling on Etsy, there is a level of quality and professionalism that is subconsciously expected from new customers when visiting a website online. Etsy is known for being a marketplace for homemade crafts, art, and other products. So, when customers are browsing that website there comes with it a diminished level of quality in imagery that is also expected. This is why professional product photography for All Natural Skin Care was important on two fronts.

  1. It matches customer expectations when they first visit your website and keeps them interested.

  2. Professionally styled images represent the quality of the product being photographed and are able to quickly convey that to a browsing customer.
